Rule, Brittania

United Kingdom FlagCNN needs better-educated researchers and/or proofreaders. On the day of Prince William’s November 2010 engagement to Kate Middleton, the scrolling banner at CNN referred to the engagement as being in Great Britian. This week, an evening news anchor woman on CNN, discussing cold weather (It’s winter, lady), showed an image of brave Vancouverites taking a dip in the frigid waters of English Bay in Vancouver. . .British Canada during the annual Polar Bear Swim on New Year’s Day. Excuse me? Canadians would no doubt be interested to learn the location of this new land or new province. This discovery will be an economic boon to cartographers everywhere.

We’re reminded of Miss South Carolina, Caitlin Upton, then 18, who gained fame in the Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant when she tried to answer a question posed by judge Aimee Teegarden: “Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?” Miss Upton’s response? “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, um, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq and everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future.”

The humiliated Miss Upton received over three million YouTube views a day with her response, and was derided as being a dumb blond. Perhaps she only watched too much CNN.
