Al Qaeda Fed Up with Ground Zero Construction Delays

June 4, 2007

Here’s the inimitable Onion’s spoof on “Freedom Tower” construction in New York City.

One does wonder whether the idea of building a patriotically-inspired tower which will be 1,776 feet tall at the site of our worst domestic and international intelligence failure bears a similarity to, say, bringing coals to Calcutta Kolkata?

Construction began in 2006 and is scheduled to be completed in 2015 if all goes well, although the design, financial and security disputes which have already arisen would fill a small novella.   February 2007 estimates put the cost for this behemoth at $3 billion.  That works out to $1,150 per square foot.  Of course, it will cost more.  Lots more.
