Free Coffin for a Holiday Drunk Driver

Just in time for the holidays, a southern Maryland newspaper, St. Mary’s Today, is offering a free coffin to the next drunk driver from the Charles, Calvert and St. Mary’s County, MD region who kills themselves while drinking and driving.

The text in the St. Mary’s ad reads: “Free Coffin Giveaway to the 1st DRUNK DRIVER TO KILL THEMSELVES DURING THIS HOLIDAY DRINKING AND DRIVING SEASON! Tired of all the nagging of loved ones, stupid commercials from MADD, cops, judges and addiction counselors? Throw a final bender this Christmas and get a cheaper funeral by being the ST. MARY’S TODAY Christmas Party DWI Dead Driver Winner! We will throw in a FREE wooden coffin…however, you could just call a cab and save us the pile of scrap lumber.”

Kenneth Rossignol, St. Mary's Today Newspaper EditorEvery week, Ken Rossignol, editor of the weekly paper, publishes the names and photographs of those charged with a DWI in the community. However, he feels people still aren’t getting the message. Rossignol commented: “You wanna die? You know, we’re gonna make it cheaper for you. . .We hope we don’t have to award a free coffin to someone, but if they want it, they’ll get it.”

His brother died in a drunk driving accident in 1975. More than 52,000 Americans have died in drunk driving incidents since 1990.

One can’t help but wonder how a person charged with a DUI or DWI in that area and later found not guilty or had charges dismissed feels about the unwanted newspaper publicity. Rossignol’s intentions may be good, but he doesn’t seem to understand the difference between being charged with a crime and being convicted of a crime.
