The Beatles, Oldies but GoldiesIt’s not too late to run away from home. If you want to reinvent yourself, here’s one possible solution: Run away to Liverpool, England — birthplace of the Beatles — and enroll at Liverpool Hope University. They’re offering a master’s degree in a new graduate program, “The Beatles, Popular Music and Society.”

The university’s website describes the rationale of the master’s degree: “ ‘The Beatles, Popular Music and Society’ marks a seminal advance in popular music studies. For the first time in the UK and possibly the world, a postgraduate taught course is offered to research into The Beatles, the city from which they emerged, the contexts of the 1960s, technology, sound and songwriting and the industries that have set up in their wake to capitalize on tourism in the city of Liverpool.”

Mike Brocken, Music Professor at Liverpool Hope University in EnglandHappily for students, the course can be taken either part-time or full-time. Four, 12-week courses will be offered, at the end of which each student will submit a dissertation on the Beatles. Mike Brocken, a Senior Lecturer in Popular Music at Hope, is one of the professors teaching the course. Professor Brocken says that while more than 8,000 books have been written about The Beatles, there’s never been a “serious academic study” of the band. He thinks the master’s program will solve the problem and fill the gap. Gap? What gap? Eight thousand books later, there’s a “gap?”

Brocken says that the university has received numerous requests for information about the course, including requests from the United States. So if you think you need to sharpen your job skills during this recession, a master’s degree in the Beatles might be just the ticket. You can call the university at 0151 291 3389 for more information. Good luck getting Mom or Dad to spring for this.
