Secret SantaA new angel has gone to Heaven. Secret Santa, whom we blogged about last month, died yesterday at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO of the esophageal cancer he’d been battling since April 2005. The Lee’s Summit self-made millionaire spent his last Christmas giving away more than $100,000 to those less fortunate than himself. Santa’s real name was Larry Stewart, 58, and he revealed his true identity just before Thanksgiving 2005, in hopes that others would carry on his practice of random acts of kindness. Over the last 26 years, he gave away more than $1.3 million dollars directly to the needy, in addition to his contributions to such charities as the Salvation Army, the ALS Foundation and the YMCA.

According to The Kansas City Star, Stewart was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love he received from people after his identity was revealed. He told The Star: “This has just completely caught me off guard . . .It’s heartwarming. The tears that I have are tears of joy, and I just want everybody to know that I am deeply grateful.

“This was never intended to be about me. I’m just doing what the Lord is directing me to do. I’m just a pair of hands and feet. He’s using me. He’s lightened my path. Part of my daily prayer was ‘Lord, let me be a better servant.’ I had no idea this is what he had in mind, but I’m happy. I’m so thrilled that he is able to use me in this way.”

Stewart was a man who truly put his beliefs into practice and lived them. We encourage others to experience the joy found in performing random acts of kindness.
