Despite high gas prices, drivers are paying up to $20,000 over the sticker price for the 2009 Dodge Challenger since dealers began taking orders on December 3. The actual car can’t be seen until the Chicago Auto Show on February 6, 2009.
Sales officially start next spring.

The suggested retail price is $37,995; an expected gas-guzzler tax could add more than $2,000 to the total. The 425-hp car, with a 6.1 liter, V8 engine, will be produced as a “limited edition’ series,” with each car getting a numbered dashboard plaque, according to CNNMoney. While it was initially reported that Chrysler would produce only 5,000 of the cars, more than 6,000 have been ordered; company spokeswoman Kathy Graham said that, as a result, Chrysler may increase production.

The car comes in three colors: Brilliant Black, Bright Silver and Hemi Orange. More than half of the pre-orders are for the Hemi Orange version.
