What is Madonna Thinking?

Singer Madonna at a Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Ball

Madonna raised eyebrows last week in this outfit. Is it any wonder? She wore this garb to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute ball. (Thinking: Clearly, money and good taste are not always synonymous.) The Louis Vuitton postage stamp micro mini-dress bloomers recall swimwear popular in the early 20th century, while the thigh-high boots with platform heels which would have done Rick James proud were just the right touch for the fetishist or dominatrix. And what is that stuff in her hair? It looks like Playboy bunny ears, gone astray. The fingerless gloves, poised delicately near a certain anatomical region of the human body, added the final “hip” touch to this ensemble. It was a _ball_, Madonna, not a freak show.

The designer guilty of this visual affront who created the “dress” was Marc Jacobs; it’s from the Louis Vuitton fall collection. People pay money to wear this? A fall collection? It’s _chilly_ in the fall. We don’t really have anything against Louis Vuitton (usually), but we never did understand why people will pay a premium to traipse about carrying purses and luggage emblazoned with someone’s…advertising. Madonna’s current boy toy, model Jesus Luz, 22, made his first formal appearance as the Material Girl’s significant other in their May-December romance. (She’s 50, more than twice his age.) He appears somewhat embarrassed, as his gaze is cast elsewhere. As always, Madonna’s well-muscled arms revolted many attracted much attention.

The British press in particular, had fun with this outfit. The Daily Mail described the get-up as breaching the limits of vulgarity, questioning its suitability in light of Madonna’s ongoing custody battle with the Malawian High Court, in her attempts to adopt three-year-old Mercy Chifundo James, whom she wants to bring to the U.S. to live with her. Madonna is said to be “confident” of winning her appeal with the Malawi High Court, after a lower court in Malawi ruled that the singer couldn’t adopt Mercy James, who would be the second Malawian child adopted by Madonna (The first was three-year-old David Banda Mwale.). The lower court rejected her bid to adopt Mercy James on the grounds that Madonna hadn’t met a one-year residency requirement. The High Court ruling is expected any day now. (Which reminds me…Are celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Madonna unaware that there are innumerable disadvantaged children of color available for adoption right here? It’s really not necessary to trek to Malawi to adopt a child in need.)

James Kambewa, Father of Mercy James, the Child from Malawi Whom Madonna Wants to Adopt

Mercy James’ father, James Kambewa, a security guard who regrets having left the child’s mother when she was pregnant, is working with the Human Rights Consultative Committee, which has campaigned against Madonna’s adoption bid. In an exclusive interview with the Mail, Kambewa said: “I don’t think Madonna is a model mum. I have seen her in movies of her songs. She doesn’t portray good morals…Madonna has millions of dollars but that doesn’t make her a good mum. Parental love is more than money…How can a woman of 50 dance almost naked on stage? I wouldn’t want my daughter to grow up like that! In Malawi women respect themselves. Cultured women do not go about half-naked…I also heard [that] after her marriage failed, she is already seeing two men, both very younger than her and her ex-husband. I hear one of them is even less than half her age. That’s scandalous. How can a normal woman fall for a boy who can as well be her son? No, spare my Mercy that scandal.”

Meanwhile, rumors swirl that Madonna will marry Jesus (Luz, that is), in a Kabbalah ceremony in New York City, while she’s taking a break from her “Sticky and Sweet” tour, which is the highest-grossing tour ever ($280 million) for a solo artist.
