Sarah Palin’s Lame Appearance on Saturday Night Live

October 19, 2008

It’s hard to believe, but Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s street cred sank even lower with her appearance yesterday on NBC’s late night comedy show, “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). Amy Poehler’s rap ditty about Alaska Governor Palin was pointed — but, as usual, Palin missed the point. Palin smiled and danced to the beat, as mock Eskimos and a faux Todd Palin cavorted behind Poehler. She smiled right up to the end, when a moose appeared on stage and fell to the sound of gunfire, in reference to Palin’s professed love of moose hunting and her environmentally unfriendly political views.

General Colin Powell Endorses Barack Obama

It hasn’t been a stellar 24 hours for the McCain-Palin campaign. This morning, retired general and former U.S Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican, crossed party lines and endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Powell described Obama as having “met the standard” as a “transformational” figure who can “electrify our country…and the world.” Importantly, General Powell also cited John McCain’s selection of Palin as a factor in his Obama endorsement, saying that Palin is “not ready to be President of the United States.”

Appearing today on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” former presidential advisor David Gergen characterized Powell’s choice as “the most important endorsement of the campaign so far.” Former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski told the Huffington Post: “I was impressed by the comprehensive indictment of the current Republican ticket that was implicit in Powell’s statement. It was not just about foreign affairs, it was a comprehensive statement that conveys the message that the more traditionally centrist Republicans are coming to view the McCain-Palin ticket as some sort of deviation — some sort of break — with the genuine traditions of the Republican Party.”

Meanwhile, loose cannon Todd Palin campaigned for his wife at a North Versailles, PA gun club today. Speaking for three minutes to a “crowd” of 75 fellow outdoorsmen at the Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen’s Club in conservative Western Pennsylvania, Mr. Palin remarked that it’s important to have a ticket that “supports our core values — hunting and fishing.”
