President George Bush with the Easter Bunny

CNN’s Anderson Cooper held a captioning contest this evening for viewers. In-house, this photograph of President George W. Bush with the Easter Bunny at the White House today was captioned: “Bunny, you’re doing a heck of a job.“ That’s pretty good. Can you top it?

President George Bush and the Easter Bunny

Mrs. Bunny and Mr. Bush don’t seem to like the looks of what they see on the horizon. Perhaps someone just informed them that Easter was yesterday? While the White House Easter Egg Roll dates back to 1878, the Mad Hatter Easter Bunny didn’t appear until introduced by First Lady Pat Nixon in 1969.

At some point, Bush ditched the rabbit long enough to address the 4,000 death milestone for U.S. troops in Iraq, which was reached on Easter. Bush told reporters that “One day, people will look back at this moment in history and say, ‘Thank God there were courageous people willing to serve, because they laid the foundations for peace for generations to come.’ ” Bush also held a two-hour National Security Council videoconference on Monday with the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, and General David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq. According to White House press secretary Dana Perino, the meeting was to rehearse discuss congressional testimony which Crocker and Petraeus will deliver on April 8 and 9.

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House

Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) had her own thoughts about the 4,000 troop deaths in Iraq. Today, she said that the cost of the war in terms of both financial and human loss is “unacceptable.” She asked: “With 4,000 American lives lost and thousands injured, many of them permanently, Americans are asking how much longer must our troops continue to sacrifice for the sake of an Iraqi government that is unwilling or unable to secure its own future?”
