After you’ve had your fill of Thanksgiving turkey and if you don’t fall asleep after gorging, try your hand at playing FreeRice, a free online game which will give your vocabulary a work-out but, more importantly, will help feed the hungry. Every time you pick the correct definition of a word, sponsors of FreeRice will donate 10 grains of rice through the United Nations to help combat world hunger. FreeRice began on 7 October with a mere 830 grains of rice donated. The game has become popular and spread virally throughout the Internet; now, over three billion grains of rice have been donated.

As The Washington Post said: “What if just knowing what a word meant could help feed hungry people around the world? Well, at FreeRice it does…the totals have grown exponentially.” Our goal is to play and donate 1,000 grains of rice a day until at least New Year’s Day. By then, we will have donated over a pound of rice. It feels good to share, especially with those less fortunate and especially on a holiday during which we commemorate our many blessings. Help stamp out world hunger.
