People Magazine Shells Out 300k for Bristol Palin Baby Photos

January 1, 2009

Bristol Palin and Fiancee Levi Johnston, High School Dropouts and Unwed ParentsIt pays to get pregnant if you’re a celebrity, even one or two degrees removed. Bristol Palin, an 18-year-old whose notable achievements are that she’s a high school dropout, an unwed mother, and the daughter of former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, gave birth to a son at 5:30 am on Saturday in Palmer, Alaska (about 20 miles northeast of Wasilla, in case you’re wondering). The seven-pound, four-ounce infant was immediately saddled with the name Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston.

The baby’s father, 18-year-old Levi Johnston, a former Wasilla High hockey player and fellow dropout, has been Bristol’s beau for three years. He’s now an apprentice electrician on Alaska’s North Slope oil fields. He and Bristol plan to marry in 2009 and live happily ever after. So …two high school dropouts with no discernible job skills procreate and this is. . . . news?

Sherry Johnston, Grandmother of Tripp Palin, Arrested on Felony Drug ChargesWell, apparently it is if grandma gets arrested on felony drug charges. This is one strange family. There were rumors that magazines planned to bid on the Palin baby pictures but, according to MSNBC, bidding heated up when Levi’s mother, Sherry Johnston, 42, was charged late last month with six felony drug charges involving Oxycontin, a controlled substance. The new grandmother’s arraignment is scheduled for 6 January. Following this incident, bidding rose to about $300,000, with People magazine emerging victorious. It pays to have a grandmother who does drugs.

Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, Now a GrandmotherMeanwhile, on New Year’s Eve, Grandma Palin quickly explained to People magazine how it is that the two high school dropouts are not really high school dropouts. Palin says that both Bristol and her fiancée, Levi, continue to work toward high school diplomas and that any suggestion otherwise “harms Bristol’s reputation and Levi’s reputation and their chances for good work opportunities.” As People itself has already reported, Bristol plans to finish high school through correspondence courses, making her. . . a high school dropout. Tripp’s father, Levi, announced in October that he was no longer attending high school and would become an apprentice electrician. Which would make him. . . a high school dropout. Later, Levi reportedly stated that he now also plans to finish high school via correspondence course. Which still makes him. . .a high school dropout. Why is any of this worth $300,000?
